Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing star Paul Whitehouse has hit out at “greenwashing nonsense”, as the star revealed the one food he refuses to eat.
The 65-year-old comedian spoke about why “steers clear” of eating farmed salmon in a conversation with friend John Bailley, who has organised the lifelong fisherman to appear at The Game Fair at Ragley Hall in Warwickshire, which is being held 28-30 July.
Paul, who will be overseeing The Investec Enclosure restaurant, didn’t hold back as he hit out at companies that described farmed salmon as “organic”.
The BBC star spoke about why salmon will not be featured when he meets diners over breakfast and lunch on July 30.
“I tend to steer clear of eating farmed salmon,” he said, before explaining: “Our precious wild salmon population is under such pressure so I avoid the farmed variety.
“It particularly annoys me when farmed salmon is sold as ‘organic’ which is just greenwashing nonsense.
“Unsuspecting Londoners buy it not realising it is just as harmful to wild salmon.
“None of us should be eating salmon right now,” he added, before suggesting that the modern-day pastime of recreational fishing now goes hand in hand with conservation.
“Show me a fisherman that is not actively involved in some way or another with river or fish conservation,” he said.
“We are a very engaged community in that way.”
Bob and Paul have appeared in the BBC’s Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing since 2018 and fans will be delighted to know that they can expect more series to come.
The show sees the pair reflect on life after their shared major heart problems, while travelling off to beautiful locations in the British countryside on a long fishing trip.
The format of each episode centres around catching a key species of fish, with Paul using his expert knowledge of fishing to help Bob along the way and Bob organising their accommodation and meals along their route.
The Game Fair is being held 28-30 July at Ragley Hall in Warwickshire.
Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
