“I don’t think Dustin would ever make a bad choice for his children and people have to understand at the end of the day, that’s who he chose this for,” Gretzky told the series.

“Of course, I get what everyone’s saying, but my dad being a hockey player [NHL Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky] — I’m sure as a kid, there were times when I’m like like, ‘Why does my dad have to play on my birthday?’

“This is about Dustin and the kids and me and taking care of us and being there with us.”

Gretzky also torpedoed any idea that former Masters champ Johnson has lost his mojo since making the jump from the PGA last June.

“If anyone thinks that Dustin has lost his competitive spirit, then they don’t know Dustin well enough because he is still ready to show you who the f*** he is,” Gretzky said. “There is a reason why he’s going back to play these majors. He wants to win just as much as they do.”

Johnson himself has said he made the move for his family.

He said on Full Swing: “I’ve had a wonderful career on the PGA Tour and I’m very proud of it, and always will be. Obviously now I’ve taken kinda of a different step in my life and career.”

And the lords of LIV Golf made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

“The decision to join LIV finally just came down to the offer they made me. For me, it was playing less, making more money, pretty simple,” the 38-year-old star said.

Johnson nailed down a $125-million payday to make the jump and earned $35 million in tourney play this past season. He added he didn’t “really care” what people said about his shift.

“I know that I’m one of the best golfers in the world. I think I’ve proven it over a long period of time. When I show up to a major, I mean, I’m there to win, and they can have their own opinion,” Johnson said. “For me personally, I feel like my reputation as a golfer is already kind of set, so I don’t think there is anything to prove.”

Meanwhile, reports suggest that fellow LIV Golf star Brooks Koepka may be having regrets about leaving the PGA Tour.

“I’m hearing a lot of rumblings that Brooks Koepka has buyer’s remorse,” golf writer Alan Shipnuck wrote in a Q&A mailbag for the website The Fire Pit Collective.

“The guy has one of the biggest egos in golf, and as the PGA Tour creates ever-increasing buzz with its elevated events and even the state-sanctioned TGL, Koepka has to feel like he’s on the outside looking in.”
