RR won the match with a couple of balls to spare as Punjab were handed their second consecutive defeat in the last two matches, both of them at their home ground at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala.
And after the disappointing exit, PBKS batting coach Wasim Jaffer lamented the poor batting performance of the team and says they ‘didn’t live up to the expectations’.
“The kind of bowling attack we had, especially the fast bowlers and even spinners, we should have bowled better in certain conditions. We didn’t live up to the expectations as a bowling unit,” Jaffer said during the post-match press conference.
After roping in Sam Curran for a record IPL deal in the auctions, and adding a few more decent players, there were a lot of expectations. But Jaffer says they failed to live up to those lofty yet pragmatic heights.
“It’s a disappointing season, without a doubt. With the kind of squad that we had, I think we needed to be in the top half of the table. I think we have definitely underperformed,” he added.
One of the main reasons for their exit is due to their poor performance in the crunch situations. PBKS lost many last over thrillers this season where they failed to prevail in high-pressure conditions. And Jaffer believes that played a massive part in their disappointing downfall as well.
“We should have won a couple of tight games but, like I said earlier also, the batting and bowling hasn’t clicked together, so that was the case throughout (the season),” the former India batter concluded.
