Peel suffer home ground loss to Claremont

Peel’s premiership campaign has taken another blow after suffering a 25-point loss to Claremont at Lane Group Stadium on Saturday.

Claremont burst out of the blocks, dominating possessions throughout the first quarter but not quite capitalising on scoring opportunities. The away team kicked 2.5, keeping Peel scoreless heading into the second quarter.

The Tigers continued their scoring inaccuracy in the second quarter with another five behinds, while Kira Phillips finally put Peel on the scoreboard with a behind. A goal from Claremont’s Ella Slocombe gave them their third for the game, broadening the margin to 27 points at half-time.

It was a slow third quarter for both sides, neither getting the footy into their forward line long enough to do enough damage. Kate Bartlett sealed Peel’s first goal of the game but Claremont’s Mikayla Western kicked one not long after to maintain their 27-point lead heading into the final term.

Peel attempted to claw their way back in the final quarter, Phillips kicking an early goal, with another two behinds not long after. But the damage was done and Claremont finished on top 5.10 (40) to Peel’s 2.3 (15) at the final siren.

Ella Roberts dominated in the forward line with 30 disposals, while Gracie Fenton and Cassie Davidson also held their own with 21 and 20 disposals.

Peel Reserves had their first taste of success for the season with a four-point win over Claremont, while the Rogers Cup side also recorded a loss, going down by 34 points to the Tigers.

Round 16 will see Peel Thunder up against Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval on June 4.
