The New Orleans Pelicans made a cap-saving move on Wednesday.

Per Michael Scotto of Hoops Hype, the Pelicans waived Garrett Temple. The 37-year-old guard’s $5.4 million salary would have become fully guaranteed if he stayed on the roster by Friday.

Temple joined New Orleans, his 11th NBA team, before the 2021-22 season. His role diminished last season, scoring 50 points in 162 total minutes across 25 games.

The former LSU standout has averaged 6.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists in 716 career games. He’s seen playoff action for five different teams.

According to Cap Sheets, the Pelicans remain approximately $1.1 million over the luxury tax after shedding Temple’s salary. They’ve had a quiet start to the offseason, currently keeping a roster led by Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram intact after a 42-40 season.

Temple likely must settle for a lesser contract to find a spot at the end of an NBA bench as a steady veteran leader. Eleven Pelicans players, including first-round pick Jordan Hawkins are aged 25 or younger.
