There’s no drama about how the 2023 NBA Draft will begin, but a Western Conference team is trying to shake up the ensuing early proceedings.

According to Shams Charania, the Pelicans will “aggressively pursue” acquiring a top pick, as high as No. 2 or 3, in the upcoming NBA Draft. They’re targeting G League point guard Scoot Henderson, a candidate to get taken with the second pick after Victor Wembanyama.

Charania said Henderson had a Sunday workout with the Charlotte Hornets, who hold the No. 2 pick. Brandon Miller is expected to work out for them Tuesday.

Henderson averaged 16.5 points, 6.8 assists, and 5.3 rebounds for the Ignite last season.

Although they missed the playoffs, the Pelicans earned their first winning record (42-40) since 2017-18 despite Zion Williamson playing 29 games. Pairing Henderson with Brandon Ingram and a healthy Williamson — assuming they don’t have to trade either — could potentially give New Orleans one of the NBA’s premier young foundations.

New Orleans has the No. 14 in this year’s draft and the option to receive either a 2024 or 2025 first-round pick from the Los Angeles Lakers.
