Penn State vs. Purdue prediction and odds for Wednesday, February 1 (Can Nittany Lions stay competitive?)

0

Penn State couldn’t keep pace with Purdue in the second half of their matchup, losing by 13 on a somewhat neutral site of the Palestra in Philadelphia.

Now, the Nittany Lions travel to West Lafayette to take on the Boilermakers at Mackey Arena. Purdue is well on its way to locking up a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament around star big man Zach Edey, who is all but certainly winning the Wooden Award for the best player in the country.

Penn State hung tough with Purdue in the first meeting, taking a six point halftime lead into the break. Can they cover the double digit spread this time around?

Penn State vs. Purdue prediction and pick

Penn State is going to struggle to keep up with the Boilermakers in this one. The Nittany Lions are one of the most three-point reliant teams in the country, taking the 10th highest rate of three’s in the country and hitting on the 13th highest percentage. However, if the shots aren’t falling, they are in serious trouble as they are bottom five in the country in offensive rebounding rate and free throw rate.

Of course, Purdue has Edey on the glass to clean up any misses for the Boilermakers where the team is fourth in the country in offensive rebounding rate.

While many may be flocking to Penn State given that Purdue has a matchup with in-state rival Indiana on Saturday on the road, I think the matchups are too big of a concern to take PSU on the road. If you can slow down Penn State’s three-point shooting, you are in business, and Purdue is a top 25 perimeter defense this season.
