People are using fruit as makeup on TikTok and the results are, quite frankly, incredible

When TikTok first burst onto our phone screens, we thought it was just going to provide some light relief in the form of catchy tunes and deceptively difficult dance routines. Fast forward a few years though and the video platform is now our go-to for everything and anything, from cooking to relationship advice, and we’re now not sure how we ever really got by without it.

But there’s one category that has given us more than any of the others, and that’s beauty. Whether it’s sharing a genius hack on how to effectively colour-match your foundation or showing us how to achieve naturally fuller lips sans filler, TikTok has become the beauty bible we never knew we needed (although, tbh, sometimes we probably don’t – anyone remember the false eyebag trend?!).

Over the last year or so, we’ve picked up tips, tricks and products that have helped us perfect our makeup game and so now, when TikTok serves us another trend – no matter how odd it seems on the surface – we sit and take note. And the latest makeup hack to hit our small screens? Using fruit as makeup.

Yep, it seems there’s a new way to get your five a day, because several content creators on the app have been uploading videos showing how they use various items from the fruit bowl to either help them apply makeup or instead of their usual products.

Take @Serenalakkiss for example, below she shows us how biting into a cherry and then smearing it on your face can actually help you achieve a flushed, glowing look without your blush or highlighter. The beauty expert uses the half eaten cherry on her cheeks, nose and lips and sorry, but we are obsessed with the results. It’s giving dewy, it’s giving natural, it’s giving us hope that we might not need to splash out on our usual £40 blusher this summer.

And we aren’t the only one who loves it. “That’s so freaking cute,” one of her fans commented beside the video, while another said: “wow????????????.”

Some even wanted her to go further. “Omggg, do a full face of using fruits,” one enthusiastic follower added.

But it’s not just cherries that can be used in place of makeup, Ukrainian beauty expert @molchanovamua, has taken things one step further. In her own fruity video, which has already had almost eight million views, the makeup artist shows us how to use blackberries as a sultry eye shadow and glossy lip stain, as well as – now this is the bit that saw our mouths drop a little – showing how a singed banana can actually help you sculpt and fill in your eyebrows and create a cat-eye flick.

We’ll repeat that. A banana can help you create a smokey eye.

Though some felt that they were unlikely to swap their modern makeup techniques for the fruit option – “That’s actually so cool. If I went back in time 20,000 years, I’d do my makeup this way ❤️” – we actually think this is a pretty good option if your baggage goes missing at the airport and you find yourself without a makeup bag on a tropical island (relatable).

And it’s not just fruit either, their nutritious sibling – the vegetable – can also be used to help create a pretty striking look too. In a second video, Molcha demonstrates how a pepper can also help replace eyeliner, while a beetroot makes for the perfect blush shade and a baby tomato creates a pretty mesmerising lip gloss.

In short, we’re pretty impressed. We’re not 100 per cent sure it makes sense to carry a fruit bowl around with us on a night out in order to top up our makeup, but we definitely think it’s a good way to use up leftovers.

What next? How to slick back your hair with raw chicken? Spoiler: don’t do this.
