Perth creative embracing the digital space

Pop-culture inspired artist Alexandria Lee has taken a bold step into the new world of NFTs.

The freelance creative recently released her first NFT collection following the rapid rise in non-fungible-tokens — a type of cryptocurrency — paving a new wave of generative art driven by the unique characteristic that means only one can be in existence, making it a collector’s dream.

Lee is known for her signature portraits of cultural icons, including Kanye West and the late Virgil Abloh, and she followed the same notion for her Martin Luther King Jr. inspired crypto-collection titled I Have a Dream.

“It is about their legacy and the mark that they’ve made in our world, which is so important. It really like resonates deeply with me and inspires my own art practice,” she told AAA.

The digital art series, which sold in a matter of hours on the largest crypto-marketplace Opensea, includes portraits of the American civil rights activist, comprising of words from his memorable 1963 speech I Have a Dream, and sold for up to $3000 per piece.

The now-Perth based artist initially began drawing in Port Hedland two years ago and has since worked with some of the biggest companies in pop culture, including Puma, Nickelodeon, Squarespace and Universal Music Australia.

The 24-year-old attributes her early success to utilising the evolution of social media and is following suit in the NFT art space.

“Compared to back in the day where it would be harder for artists to have to have a physical exhibition and things would just be a lot harder. These days, there’s just so much opportunity out there, now all you have to have is your phone,” she said.
