Perth to get southern hemisphere’s largest SURF PARK

Perth’s long-awaited surf park is an important step closer to becoming reality with the company behind the proposal securing a long-term site lease in Cockburn.

WA Planning Minister Rita Saffioti announced on Monday that park creators Aventuur had signed a 21-year lease with the State Government for a 5.7has lot in Jandakot to become home to the $100 million facility.

Set to be largest surf park in the southern hemisphere, Aventuur’s forthcoming surf park is expected to create 260 jobs during its construction. Once completed, the park will support the equivalent of 65 full time positions.

Aventuur chairman Andrew Ross said the wave park would service WA’s 300,000 surfers as well as acting as a major tourism draw card.

“Surfing is a deeply ingrained part of Perth’s culture . . . yet it’s challenging to be a Perth surfer due to limited access to quality conditions, crowded lineups and marine hazards,” he said.

“The Perth surf park will overcome these challenges, creating a world-class destination in WA that will provide opportunities for active recreation, tourism, sports development and job creation.”

The project is expected to be completed in the first half of 2024.

It will include Australia’s largest and most advanced surfing lagoon, a 100-room boutique hotel, co-working and creative office space, functions, conferencing and event spaces, a surf coaching academy as well as a beach club, bars and restaurants.

“It is great to see this exciting project which will showcase Western Australia’s vibrant surfing culture, take a significant step forward with the lease agreement now confirmed,” Ms Saffioti said.

“The proposal will create the largest surf park in the Southern Hemisphere, unlocking local jobs and economic opportunities.

“The project site in Jandakot will be well serviced by our road and rail upgrades in the area, including the Kwinana Freeway widening, the Thornlie-Cockburn Link and the North Lake Road and Armadale Road Bridge.”

Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett said the wave park would help cement the Cockburn Central precinct as the “capital” of Perth’s south.

Aventuur, which is based in WA, already operates a surf park in Victoria.
