Taylor Swift may have left Perth off her Eras tour schedule but producers John Frost and Suzanne Jones know where it’s at with the announcement their Australian tour of sizzling cell block musical Chicago will begin in Perth at Crown Theatre in November.
“Chicago has everything that people love about a Broadway musical — a story of fame, fortune and all that jazz, one show-stopping number after another and the most amazing dancing you’ve ever seen,” Frost and Jones said.
“We are thrilled to bring the razzle dazzle of this New York institution back to Australia.”
The pair are collaborating with long-time partners and American theatre producers Barry and Fran Weissler to tour the longest-running American musical in Broadway and West End history, also the winner of six Tony Awards, two Olivier Awards and a Grammy Award.
“Chicago continues to be as fresh, vibrant and relevant as the day we opened on Broadway,” producers Barry and Fran Weissler add.
“The legendary John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse created a near perfect musical. Whether you are a seasoned theatregoer or a first-timer, Chicago delivers must-see entertainment.”
Set amid the decadence of the 1920s, the musical is packed with greed, corruption, exploitation and adultery as cellmate rivals Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly do everything in their power to avoid murder convictions, with the help of slick criminal lawyer Billy Flynn.
Auditions are being held now to find the new cast and the Australian tour is set to travel to Brisbane then Melbourne after its Perth season.
Tickets go on pre-sale August 14, with general public tickets on sale from August 18.
