Perth’s Glamour Nail Bar launches polishes for BOYS

Whoever said children should be seen not heard may very well have been squeezing in a quick mani/pedi.

But now kids can make as much noise as they like and have the nails to boot with Clawlicious Make Some Noise — a range of nail polishes specifically for boys.

Co-owner of Glamour Nail Bar, Jani Schaper already offers “kid-friendly” services at its Subiaco and Cockburn locations and has a kids range of nail polishes as part of their Clawlicious polish line.

But after noticing the number of boys who love coming in with their mums to get their nails done, they decided to cater to kids who weren’t into the traditional “girls’” colours.

“Getting your nails done doesn’t have to just be a thing for women or girls,” she told Perth Now.

“We’ve got lots of boys coming in with their mums and they want their nails done as well.”

Schaper says Make Some Noise is the first-ever range of polishes in Australia specifically for boys, and was inspired by her four-year-old son, Taj.

“It was kind of Taj that gave me the idea because Scarlet (Schaper’s eight-year-old daughter) was getting her nails done with some of the unicorns on them and he’s like, ‘mummy, can you do mine as well?’ And I’m like, ‘oh no I’ve got nothing but unicorn and mermaid stickers’.”

The “gender neutral” range of colours and stickers take cues from all the things boys love like dinosaurs and ninjas.

Clawlicious is vegan and cruelty free, toxin free and don’t chip — perfect for when your son shoves his fingers in his mount just moments after his nails have been painted.

Of course, men painting their nails isn’t anything new. During David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust era his nails were painted teal, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has been sporting striped nails for decades and Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain’s black nails in the 90s were copied by teenagers, but Schaper believes the “trend is growing”.

Just look at recent photos of male celebrities like Pete Davidson, Lil Nas X and A$AP Rocky, who are rarely seen without nail polish.

Our favourite gender-fluid style icon Harry Styles has his own beauty brand Pleasing, after his brightly coloured nail art he’s been showing off for years now, as does Machine Gun Kelly with UN/DN LAQR.

Schaper and her business partners (husband Dane and Chrissie Parry) launched Clawlicious Make Some Noise on Thursday and have already had appointment times snapped up for the school holidays.

“We do have lots of kids booking for the next few weeks — girls and boys,” she said.
