With the summer weather, longer days and holiday months approaching, drivers across the UK will be travelling and filling up more often.
Oftentimes when drivers get to the petrol station, they will see other motorists queued at the pumps waiting for a space to become free.
These spaces will usually depend on motorists queuing for which side of their car the fuel tank is on.
While sitting in these queues, drivers may leave their engines running and idling will waste even more fuel and money.
Graham Conway, motoring expert at Select Car Leasing, explained how motorists can avoid wasting time when at the filling station.
He said: “But there is a solution – and it’s irritatingly obvious to those motorists who’ve adopted the habit – because you can use any fuel pump, no matter whether the nozzle is to the left or right. It’s like a petrol station super power!
“The hose that is attached to the fuel pump nozzle extends as you pull it away from the pump.
“This means you can happily walk around to the opposite side of your car and dispense the fuel from there.”
Motorists don’t need to wait in line, with the line winding back into place once the driver has filled their tank up.
Mr Conway described the technique as “so simple” but that some drivers are “unaware of the ‘hack’” or potentially too nervous to try it.
When trying this, motorists may have a number of fears, either out of embarrassment or in fear they will damage their car or the pump.
If a driver is filling up, motorists are reassured that when stretching the hose around the car, it will not scratch any of the paintwork.
Drivers should always try and park at the petrol or diesel pump to ensure they leave enough space for other vehicles to pass around the side.
Graham Conway issued another warning to drivers when filling up to be careful when it comes to the nozzle dripping or leaking.
He said: “Drivers need to know that this residue fuel can be incredibly bad for the paint, particularly around the fuel filler cap.
“Petrol can be more corrosive than diesel and over time those drips can strip the paint of its protective layer of ‘clear coat’.
“If you are a dribbler it’s wise to keep a rag handy to wipe excess fuel away before it’s had a chance to cause any damage.”
