‘Petty’: Furious driver slams neighbour for using wheelie bins to reserve parking spaces

The driver explained her situation on social media, saying that she lives in a residential parking area and her neighbours have been using controversial tactics to reserve spaces. She said that her “next door but one” neighbours have a car, with their three adult sons having cars as well.

Another relative of the neighbour also parks their car outside their house, rather than his own.

Writing on Mumsnet, she claimed that they all park their cars on the street.

The driver continued, saying: “When they are not home they save their space with a wheelie bin in the road.

“When I move the bin off the road one or other of the kids (not always the adult ones) comes out from nowhere and starts shouting and swearing at me.

The concerned resident then questioned whether she was being unreasonable to be fed up.

This tactic has been seen across the country with residents concerned that someone may take their space.

Unconventional items including wheelie bins, traffic cones and even shopping trolleys filled with rocks have been used.

While the practice is unlikely to incur a fine, Gloucestershire County Council said it is “not permitted” and officials will remove them if necessary.

“But they shouldn’t be blocking the road. I’m sure this contravenes the Highway Code?

“I would start recording everything.

“When they block with a wheelie bin and how they retaliate. It’s the retaliation which may need to escalate to the police.”

Another driver asked: “Does it stop you being able to park your car or are you just getting a bee in your bonnet about it?

“Sometimes, life’s too short for petty squabbles.”

A third commenter suggested that she should move the bin and park there instead.

They added that someone on their street used to do it and eventually stopped putting the bin out.
