Pro golfers who refused to be bankrolled by Saudi Arabia are being praised for “standing up for decency” — all as the kingdom plans a Bay State tourney.

The Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series is poised to announce a Greater Boston date for Sept. 2-4 at The International golf course in Bolton. A man answering the phone in the Pro Shop declined to comment and hung up on the Herald.

Wives, sons, daughters and other loved ones of 9/11 victims are continuing their push to call out Saudi involvement in professional golf as they sue the kingdom in a Manhattan court. The PGA golfers who refuse to join the LIV circuit are the latest to win their praise.

“We know that not all of you are millionaires, and that you compete to win tournaments, fame, and glory. We appreciate and applaud your spirit, drive, and talents, and believe that is all part of what makes competitive sports great,” a letter signed by nearly 2,500 Sept. 11 group members states.

They add: “We will Never Forget. Thank you for reminding all Americans and people of the world that we should never forget. Thank you for doing what is right.”

Golfer Phil Mickelson, who didn’t make the cut at last week’s U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, is one of the pros who did “defect” to the Saudi Arabia-backed LIV Golf Series.

Anger over the Saudis builds as President Biden is set to visit the kingdom as gas prices soar. Yet 9/11 kin are pushing back, making the point Biden should punish the Saudis for reported links to the murder of a Washington Post journalist and the funding of 9/11 hijackers.
