This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield was allegedly in an office with show boss Martin Frizzell when he was told his contract, due to end this summer, was not being renewed, according to The Sun.

His exit was confirmed on Saturday following rumours of a feud with co-host Holly Willoughby.

An insider told the publication the row was putting guests off when it came to starring on the show.

They suggested Holly and Phillip have had a “private chat”, thought to be on the phone, since Thursday’s show.

A source said: “It’s been a very difficult time for them but they talked about the end of an era and called something of a truce.”

Express.co.uk has contacted ITV for comment after it appeared Phillip agreed to step back from the show.

Speculation over whether Phillip or Holly would step down amid the feud claims has been rife over the past week.

On May 13 it was reported that Phillip’s final appearance could be “in a matter of weeks” after Phillip released his statement about his friendship with Holly.

Sources claimed neither Holly nor ITV knew about the statement.

The source told The Mirror: “Phillip’s contract is up for renewal at the end of this year and as it stands, there are a number of people working on the show who think it’s time for a shake-up.”

After more than 20 years on the This Morning sofa, Phillip stepped back from the morning show having presented his last episode on May 18.

He will continue to present peak-time shows for ITV including next month’s The British Soap Awards and a new prime-time series.

Holly will remain on This Morning and will co-present with regular faces like Alison Hammond.

Kevin Lygo, ITV’s Managing Director, Media and Entertainment said: “Phillip is hands down one of the best broadcasters of his generation and we thank him for his two decades worth of absolutely terrific television on the This Morning sofa.

“This Morning is made by one of the best and most diligent teams in television, who produce over 12 hours of live television each week.”

“We look forward to continuing our relationship with Phillip starting with The British Soap Awards in June and a brand new peak time series to come.”

Alison Hammond is the bookies’ favourite to replace Phillip as a regular This Morning host.
