Phillip Schofield left in tears after impact of Ricky Gervais’ After Life ‘In bits!’

This Morning’s Phillip Schofield and Rochelle Humes were in for a treat on Thursday as the pair welcomed Anti the dog to the show. Anti has become a household name thanks to her starring role in Netflix’s After Life, written and led by Golden Globe-winner Ricky Gervais. The tear-jerking comedy-drama has already skyrocketed up the streaming service’s charts and Philip paid tribute to Anti and the series by candidly revealing he broke down in tears over the finale.

Welcoming Anti and her owners Ash and Beth to the ITV show, Phillip wasted no time in gushing over the canine as he said: “What a treat, she’s so beautiful, and what a star of the show, a proper star of the show as well.”

Beth and Ash then delved into their own relationship and how much Anti is an integral part of their family before their attention turned to her stint as Brandy in After Life.

Phillip explained how the series has provided a time for him and his family to sit down and watch together – and everyone found themselves reaching for the tissues as a result.

The This Morning host said: “We’re watching it as a family, our group, and it was my eldest daughter who said, ‘Oh, my God, we’ve just finished season three, the one that’s out now, and we’re in bits’.

He continued: “She and her boyfriend Will, they’re absolutely in bits and they were, I think, one show ahead of me.

“(Then) I got to the end of it and I posted this picture in our group.”

Phillip then shared a snap of himself in tears which he’d sent to his family after watching Tony’s (played by Ricky Gervais) story come to a close.

“That’s me at the end of After Life,” he commented. “And it was actually, you know, Brandy, Anti, who did a lot of that to me.

“It’s a stunning series to be in, it’s absolutely beautiful,” he emotionally commended.

Rochelle was similarly full of praise for the show – but it’s not the only major role Anti has landed, as Ash and Beth explained.

Phillip asked: “So what’s she worked on? Who’s she worked with? Because I think, was it George Clooney who said she’s the best-behaved dog he’s ever worked with?”

“That was on Midnight Sky, a Netflix film,” Ash replied. “She’s worked on Doc Martin, Midsomer Murders, Edge of Tomorrow, Father Brown, Kingsman…

“Yeah, she was playing the two robot attack dogs, Julianne Moore’s attack dogs. The reference footage of them like chasing Elton John around is her.”

Discussing her then landing the part in After Life, Phillip admitted Anti’s previous on-screen stints were more “feature roles” whereas Brandy is “essential” to the Netflix series.

“She’s essential to the story – she’s really, Brandy in After Life, the only thing keeping him [Tony] going after the tragic death of his wife [Lisa (Kerry Godliman)], you know his friends try to boost him up, he hates the world, but he does have this incredible love with this dog.

“So how did Anti end up on After Life?” he asked.

Ash revealed: “So I got an email saying Ricky Gervais has picked Anti off the website, stuntdogs.net is our website and all of our dogs have profiles on there where you can see photos and videos of them,

“And he just picked her off that and then we met him on Hampstead Heath and he took her for a walk and that was it…

“She was cast in the show. Yeah, three seasons of it, it’s been a real blessing,” Ash admitted.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
After Life seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix now.
