Actor Julian Sands has been identified as the hiker who was reported missing last week on Mt. Baldy, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said Wednesday.
Sands, 65, a British actor who now lives in North Hollywood, was reported missing in the Baldy Bowl area around 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, according to Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Mara Rodriguez. He had been hiking alone at the time of his disappearance.
Ground crews began searching for the missing person that day but were pulled off the mountain Saturday due to trail conditions and the risk of avalanche, she said.
In the meantime, helicopters and drones will be used when weather permits.
“We will schedule another ground search when the weather improves, and it is safe for our ground crews,” Rodriguez said. “It is our recommendation that people stay away from that area. It is extremely dangerous and even experienced hikers are getting in trouble.”
In a Thursday update, authorities said a Jan. 14 ping from Sands’ iPhone showed him on one of the trails to Mt. Baldy’s summit. Additional pings were not successful due to poor cell service and Sand’s cell phone likely being out of battery, the update said.
A car was also left behind by Sands at Mt. Baldy, according to Rodriguez. As of Thursday afternoon, crews were still not authorized to search for Sands on the ground due to poor weather conditions.
Sands, who hails from the United Kingdom, is best known for his roles in films including A Room with A View, Warlock, The Killing Fields, and Leaving Las Vegas.
Representatives for Sands did not immediately return requests for comment.
