Perth-raised London-based photographer Morgan Shaw is bringing a taste of Italy to his hometown in his first solo exhibition, La Costa.
Shaw’s large-scale images taken over the last year capture the unique spirit of the Mediterranean, and will be on display from December 15-22 at There Is Gallery in Northbridge — owned by former PR queen Melissa Lekias and her street artist partner Stormie Mills.
Shaw, a former high school teacher, moved to London in 2019, cutting his teeth on campaigns for Cartier and photographing pop stars such as Cheryl Cole.
“I was full-time teaching in Perth and then jumped over to photography to kind of scratch that itch,” he said. “Travelling and seeing new places and exploring new regions and being able to get creative.”
Staring at the prospect of another winter in London, made more “grim” with the addition of COVID-19, the 30-year-old decided it was a good opportunity to show what he had been working on between his regular gig as a fashion and lifestyle photographer.
“I came back to Perth and was desperately trying to find an exhibition space,” he said.
“I got lucky with a friend introducing me to them (Lekias and Mills). And then he sent the body of work over to them. They loved it and wanted to have a meeting.”
He is thrilled to unveil his work.
“I’m looking forward to showing them off to friends and family and everyone else.”
He said opening night will celebrate all things Italian through the food, drinks, music, and a few “cheeky little Italian experiences on the night”.
“I’m trying to make it a completely Italian immersive experience,” he said.
“I think it captures the vibe of the Mediterranean how the Italian coast feels.”
