Northridge Hospital Medical Center on Thursday, July 28, marked one year of distributing free produce as part of its partnership with the American Heart Association — the first free, fresh produce distribution center in the San Fernando Valley.
Northridge Hospital hosts a free, monthly, drive-thru food distribution event. The program has distributed more than 100,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables to more than 4,000 community members, officials said.

“We’re serving about 400 families a month,” said Paul Watkins, president and CEO of the medical center, “people who might not otherwise have produce in their homes.”
According to the AHA, Los Angeles County is home to the largest population of food-insecure households in the nation.
