A California Monterey-style home once owned by late Academy Award-winning actress Donna Reed is for sale at $4.175 million in Palm Springs.
Sited on a three-quarter-acre lot in the Old Las Palmas neighborhood, it’s made up of the main house and a separate guest house for a total of five bedrooms, six bathrooms, and 4,341 square feet of living space. The residence designed by architect Charles O. Matcham dates to 1934.
Reed, who died of pancreatic cancer in 1986 at 64, was not the original owner. Palm Springs Life reported in 2007 that she owned the home from 1966 to 1970.
According to the listing agent, the current owner has made many improvements since picking up the property. Records show it last sold in 2008 for $2.75 million.
Highlights of the main house include a kitchen with a walk-in pantry and a freestanding butcher block island. There’s an oversized butler’s pantry, a formal dining room, and a sunroom that the seller uses as sleeping quarters making for an unofficial sixth bedroom.
A fireplace anchors the living room, which offers views of the front and rear garden.
Follow the wood banister staircase to the second floor and encounter the primary suite. It has a fireplace, balcony and a spa-like bathroom with a custom dual vanity.
Outdoors, there’s a backyard pool and shaded lounge areas. A barbecue area with bar seating, a fruit orchard and a lush garden add to the offerings.
Bill Convey of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California holds the listing.
Reed had many memorable roles in film and TV. She appeared opposite James Stewart as George Bailey’s wife in Frank Capra’s fantasy holiday film “It’s A Wonderful Life” (1946) and won a best-supporting actress Oscar for her portrayal of a prostitute in the romantic war drama “From Here to Eternity” (1953).
In the hit “Donna Reed Show,” her role as the quintessential homemaker earned a best actress Emmy nomination every year of its run from 1959 to 1962.
