Piaget Goes Green With New Polo Skeleton And Date Watches

It’s no secret that green has become the new blue this year when it comes to watch dials. Make no mistake, blue is still a beloved color, but watch brands are recognizing the soothing effect green has. It reminds us of nature, life and Earth – something everyone is trying to protect these days. As such, it comes as no great surprise that Swiss watch brand Piaget would opt to bedeck its beloved Polo watches in vibrant green.

In fact, according to the brand, the exact color of green chosen for two of its Polo models — the Piaget Polo Skeleton and the Polo Date — was inspired by the verdant green surroundings in La Cote-aux-Fees, Switzerland, in the Jura mountains where it has been located since its founding in 1874.

The 42mm Piaget Polo Date watch is crafted in 18-karat rose gold with matte and polished finish. The dial is dramatic thanks to its horizontal ribbed motif in rich green. Luminous hands and markers outlined in gold offer harmonious balance. The watch is powered by the 1110P self-winding Manufacture movement and features a sapphire case back for viewing of the movement, complete with gray oscillating weight engraved with the Piaget coat of arms. It is fitted with a stunning green alligator strap, and retails for $30,000.

Conversely, the 42mm Piaget Polo Skeleton – a much-coveted timepiece by Piaget lovers – is crafted in stainless steel. It is powered by a mechanical self-winding skeletonized movement whose bridges and outer chapter dial ring are crafted in bright green. Skeletonized watches are difficult to make, since the master watchmakers must carve away the majority of the metal of each component to allow for high visibility but still ensure strength and durability.

By creating certain movement parts in green, accented against the white metal case, and with the moving parts visible, the watch almost seems to come to life. The Polo Skeleton watch offers 44 hours of power reserve when fully wound. It is being sold with an interchangeable stainless steel bracelet and a green alligator strap. It retails for $30,900.

Piaget is no stranger to the color green, though. As early as the 1960’s, green was integral to the brand’s jewelry and watches. The brand was a leader in using gemstones for watch dials, and unveiled dials made of malachite and jade (along with blue lapis lazuli and golden brown tiger eye). To this day, the brand continues to unveil timepieces with gemstone dials.
