Piers Morgan calls Liverpool fans pathetic for booing national anthem

A large selection of Liverpool supporters made it clear online that they did not want the anthem played ahead of their match against Brentford on Saturday, which they won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Mohamed Salah, despite being informed by the club in the days prior.

Chants of ‘Liverpool, Liverpool’ were heard rather than God Save The King, just hours after King Charles III was crowned in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The Reds supporters then belted out a hearty rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ once the anthem had concluded, with a flag labelling Kenny Dalgleish as the ‘king’ waved in the Kop as an alternative.

Liverpool fans have since come under fire for their jeers, with Morgan labelling them ‘pathetic’ in a blunt, one-worded tweet. The responses to the TV personality’s comment were very much divided, with some championing the freedom of speech at Anfield.

Morgan doubled down on the sentiment of his message in response to a tweet claiming that Liverpool fans were free to respond to the anthem as they wished. He wrote: “Championing free speech doesn’t mean agreeing with everything you hear. Liverpool fans are perfectly entitled to boo the anthem on the day of the coronation – just as I’m perfectly entitled to call them pathetic for doing so.”

Clubs were advised by the Premier League to play the anthem prior to kick-off, though Liverpool did make it clear in their statement that supporting the action was for fans to decide. They said: “Just over a week ago, the Premier League contacted all home clubs and strongly suggested to mark this historic occasion across home matches this weekend and provided a list of activities for clubs to get involved in.

“Before kick-off and in recognition of the Premier League’s request to mark the coronation, players and officials will congregate around the centre circle when the national anthem will be played. It is, of course, a personal choice how those at Anfield on Saturday mark this occasion and we know some supporters have strong views on it.”

Jurgen Klopp was asked about the booing after his side’s win, though he remained neutral in his response, saying: “The club’s position is my position. That is clear. Besides that, this is definitely a subject which I cannot really have a proper opinion about. I am from Germany, we don’t have a king or a queen, I am 55 years old and I have no experience of that.”
