Moeen Ali: West Indies batting depth ‘scary’

England legend Kevin Pietersen rolled back the years and hit a destructive 86 off just 38 balls during a Legends League Cricket match, with his innings including a brutal takedown of former Sri Lanka star Sanath Jayasuriya.

Pietersen, 41, struck Jayasuriya for 30 in one over, striking three fours and three sixes.

In total, Pietersen hit nine fours and seven sixes during his innings as World Giants completed a comfortable seven-wicket win over Asia Lions.

Pietersen posted a clip of his innings on Twitter after the game with the caption: ” #AboutLastNight if you have a minute!”

Indian cricketer Shreevats Goswami responded by suggesting Pietersen should return to the IPL.

“I’d be too expensive and would probably end up being the top scorer in the league,” Pietersen joked. “It would embarrass all the modern day players!”

The next highest scorer in the match was former Afghanistan skipper Asghar Afghan, who made 41 off 26 balls to help Asia Lions post 149-7.

Morne Morkel and Ryan Sidebottom were the pick of the bowlers for World Giants, each taking two wickets apiece.

In response, Pietersen blasted 86 before getting caught off legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, before Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien finished things off with 31 not out off 24 balls as World Giants reached their target with seven overs to spare.

Pietersen is currently the third leading run scorer in Legends League Cricket with 164 at an average of 41 and a strike rate of over 200.

The only players to have scored more than him are Upul Tharanga, who still plays domestic cricket in Sri Lanka, and Naman Ojha, who only retired last year.

The competition is being staged in Oman and has featured fellow legends such as ex-India opener Virender Sehwag, former Pakistan quick Shoaib Akhtar and Australia’s Brett Lee.
