Pigtails are the latest ’90s trend to make a major comeback

It’s undeniable that nostalgia is powering the top beauty trends at the moment – see: baby braids, butterfly liner, the ’90s heartthrob bob. But now pigtails have made a major return, after falling off our radar since we left them behind in Year 4.

We get they might not be everyone’s cup of tea, the last time we were splitting our hair in two and braiding them into cutesy plaits, our mums were in charge of our hairstyles and our favourite accessory was our Barbie lunch box. Time have changed. But, like us, pigtails have grown up and paired with some other ’90s staples (like crop tops, hoop earrings and glossy lips) they’ve picked-up a throwback cool-factor along the way.

Celebs like Yara Shahidi, Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner have been bringing the style back in their own ways. Yara proved that pigtails can be fancy when she elevated them alongside a high-low fashion look that featured an Adidas tracksuit with a luxe lemon-coloured corset top for her appearance at last years MTV awards.

Hailey Bieber’s been inspired by the hairstyle ever since she channelled Britney’s Spears Baby One More Time look for Halloween last October. Since then, she’s being wearing relaxed, low-key pigtails for off-duty days. She recently paired hers with a ’90s baseball cap.
