The good news is there are lots of options for those who still want to have a drink, just without alcohol.
You might be familiar with the phrase “Dry January.”
It is a public health campaign introduced by Alcohol Change UK in 2013 that encourages people to avoid alcohol for the first 31 days of the year. The idea even goes back to 1942, when the government of Finland came up with “Sober January” as part of its war effort against the Soviet Union.
In 2014, Alcohol Change UK trademarked the name and “Dry January” seems to be more of a thing with each passing year. Going without alcohol can have many health benefits, such as lower blood pressure, weight loss, improved sleep and less risk of cancer, stroke and other ailments.

Last January, MADD Canada partnered with So.Beer, The Naked Collective’s Non Alcoholic beer brand, to create a campaign promoting health and wellness among Canadians. Alternatives don’t taste like the non-alcoholic beer you might have tried in the past. Some are quite solid.
Some of the best-known variations come from Partake, a Calgary brewery that offers non-alcoholic beers in a variety of styles (IPA, blonde, red, stout, etc.). Each beverage only boasts 10-30 calories.
There’s also Montreal’s Sober Carpenter craft beer. The American company Athletic Brewing Co. is also popular.
Another alternative is Liquid Death water, which comes in cans that look like beer cans. Wellington Brewery has hopped-up water.
There are also plenty of non-beer, alcohol-free options, like Gruvi’s dry prosecco, Fluere’s zero proof rum and Muskoka Brewery’s Wandr sparkling teas, among others.
The LCBO offers a number for sale.
