ENGLAND: Defender Brendan Galloway is excited to be able to play his part in Plymouth Argyle’s final push for League One promotion despite a broken right hand.
The Zimbabwe international will wear a protective covering to allow him to take to the pitch after Argyle’s head physio Gareth Law consulted with some hand specialists.
That was what allowed him to return to action and play the whole of the 1-0 Devon derby victory over Exeter City at St James Park on Saturday.
Galloway suffered his injury during the 3-1 Good Friday win away to Morecambe, but was not exactly sure how or when he did the damage.
He said: “It happened in the first half, I know that. There was a drinks break and I went to take a drink and my hand was really sore.
“I didn’t think anything of it and then at half-time just got it strapped up and played the second half. It felt alright, maybe it was just the adrenalin.
“We had to go for an X-ray the next morning and they told me some bad news – it was a gutting feeling – but Lawsy has worked hard to make it fit and try to get me back out there and I’m really happy about that.”
The 27-year-old continued “There was a few breaks in each hand. The X-ray looked worse than how it feels.
“They told me bad news basically, but my thought was that there was seven games left of the season and I wanted to play, and by any means. That’s the mentality that I have always had, and that’s the mentality I have got to have.”
Galloway was asked whether there was ever a time when he thought he might not play again this season, he replied: “At first it was. I had a very bad feeling, it’s not nice, especially now we are at the exciting part and the exciting games.
“When we figured out a way for it to work I was over the moon. I just wanted to be out there by any means.
“I think a lot of players have a lot of pain during games, and stuff like that, but it’s so important this time of the season so we have just got to get over the line.”
Galloway continued: “The work that Lawsy has done to strap it up and make it all secure has been fantastic. I’m not in any pain, I don’t feel in any discomfort.
“I don’t feel in danger at all. Lawsy spoke to a few hand specialists as well to give the all clear, so it’s all good on my side.
“I was in a hard cast at first. When the game comes I have got to strap it up and put extra padding on it just to be secure.”
Argyle returned to the top of League One after beating Exeter and they will aim to take another step closer towards securing promotion when they play away to 10th-placed Shrewsbury Town tomorrow.
The Pilgrims will then have three successive home games against Cambridge United, Bristol Rovers and Burton Albion before ending the campaign away to Port Vale on Sunday, May 7.
Galloway said: “This is exciting, it’s the position you want to be in as a player. It’s exciting for the whole club, for the city, for the fans, for the staff, for the players.
“So it’s a time you don’t want to miss. You want to be fully fit and focused and as a football player what better time to be top of the league with five games left.”
