Pokemon Go’s Magikarp Spotlight Hour is next up in May 2022! As well as the chance to catch a Shiny Magikarp, players can also score one of the game’s most useful bonuses.
Introduced by Niantic in 2020, Pokemon Go’s Spotlight Hour has become one of the title’s most popular recurring events. For the next celebration of May, Trainers will get a chance to catch the Kanto region’s Water-type Magikarp.
While Magikarp may not be the strongest addition to your team, this Spotlight Hour offers the perfect chance to stock up on Candy to evolve one into Gyarados – especially as you’ll need a massive 400 Candy to do that.
As has been the case since 2020, each Tuesday of every month is dedicated to hosting a 60-minute celebration for a single Pokemon. Trainers exploring the map during the set time will encounter the selected ‘mon with boosted spawn rates.

Pokemon Go Magikarp Spotlight Hour date & start time
On Tuesday, May 17, 2022, the Pokemon Go Magikarp Spotlight Hour will take place.
The limited-time event kicks off at its usual time at 6 PM and runs until 7 PM local time, meaning no matter where you are in the world, the event starts at that time.
This is the third Spotlight Hour of May 2022, so get ready to catch some Magikarp!
In 2022, a Mystery Bonus Hour will run alongside Spotlight celebrations.
How to prepare for Magikarp Spotlight Hour in Pokemon Go
Preparation for this Spotlight Hour is crucial, as it only lasts – you guessed it – 60 minutes. Here’s what you can do to get ready for it:
- Use your PokeCoins to buy an Incense to use during the hour.
- Clear out space in your Pokemon Storage Box for all the Magikarp you’ll catch.
- Bring a lot of Poke Balls with you so you can catch plenty of Pokemon.
- Collect Pokemon Candy for the Spotlight Hour Pokemon to evolve it!
Pokemon Go Magikarp Spotlight Hour bonus
For the Spotlight Hour on May 17, 2022, players will snag Double Evolution XP as part of the event bonuses.
This 2x Evolution XP bonus will apply to any Pokemon, not just Magikarp, so it’s a good idea to sort through any Pokemon in your collection that can be evolved and do that during the event – then you’ll level up in no time.
We always recommend using an XP-boosting Lucky Egg during Spotlight Hours. Since December 2020, Pokemon Go’s level cap was increased from level 40 to 50, so you won’t want to miss out on this chance to score some easy points.
There will be loads of Magikarp to catch during this event.
Is Shiny Magikarp in Pokemon Go?
The good news is that Shiny Magikarp is currently available in Pokemon Go, which means Shiny Gyarados is also available. They made their debuts during the Water Festival 2017 event.
Shiny Pokemon are incredibly hard to find, but there’s arguably no better time to get one than during a Spotlight Hour when there will be hundreds of Pokemon for you to encounter.
Does Magikarp have an evolution in Pokemon Go?
Magikarp is able to evolve into Gyarados with the help of 400 Candy. There are no special items or Buddy tasks needed for this evolution process.
This is one of the most expensive evolutions in the game, but a Spotlight Hour is a perfect time to stock up on Candy. Make sure you use Pinap Berries when catching Magikarp to earn bonus Candy.
Remember, you can also transfer any Magikarp you don’t need to get some extra Candy – just make sure you check their stats by getting an appraisal before doing so to make sure you don’t transfer a good one!
