With the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, you can play the Nintendo 64 classic Pokémon Stadium, bringing back all your favorites from the original Red, Blue, and Yellow games. It’s complete with all the same tournaments and mini-games that existed before but remastered for the Switch, so old and new players can experience it for themselves.
Unfortunately, one key feature didn’t make it to the new console: Pokémon Transfer. It’s impossible to bring your Pokémon from outside games like you could in the original. Still, luckily Stadium provides all 151 first-generation Pokémon as Rental Pokémon for you and your friends to battle with. However, not all the Rental Pokémon are great. Whether it’s their stats or the moves they come with, some Pokémon aren’t worth using. This list will rank the ten best rentals in the game so you know who to put on your team.
10
Alakazam
You may be surprised to see Alakazam so low on this list. After all, it has the highest Special stat in the game and decent speed, making it a certified powerhouse. Unfortunately, not all Rental Pokémon were created equal.
In Pokémon Stadium, the higher ends of evolution chains suffer from a set of moves that are not optimal to balance the game. Alakazam, for example, has the move Psybeam when it would prefer Psychic, which is objectively better. While usable, there are many other Pokémon that can take its place.
9
Persian
As a Team Rocket favorite, Persian earns its place on this list for being a great endgame Pokémon. With a substantial 138 Speed, it will go first against most Pokémon, and due to the way critical chance is calculated in Pokémon Stadium, it can dish out more damage than you may think. You can easily clean up your opponent’s last Pokémon with Persian.
However, if you’re unlucky, you may not get the critical hits you need, which may result in a lost fight, but that’s the gamble you take with this Pokémon.
8
Lapras
Lapras is well known for being a very tanky Pokémon with a large health pool and great defensive stats, and that holds true in Pokémon Stadium. Boasting 206 Health points and 101 Defense, it can take most attacks head-on without going into the red, and its move set is fairly balanced.
Ice Beam allows Lapras can take advantage of its relatively high Special stat and get extra damage from the Same Type Attack Bonus. Body Slam is a great neutral move with a chance to Paralyze, and Sing is a decently accurate way to put Pokémon to sleep. Unfortunately, Lapras’s worst matchups are some of the strongest Pokémon in the game.
7
Jynx
Jynx may surprise you on this list, but don’t underestimate it. Jynx is a speedy Pokémon with a significant 121 points in Special, meaning its Psychic attack can two-hit KO most Pokémon with little threat to itself. Lovely Kiss is also probably the most consistent way to apply Sleep in the game.
With Ice Punch as an option, Jynx is one of the few rentals to have two powerful moves that benefit from the Same Type Attack Bonus. These moves allow Jynx to deal with any opponent. Of course, Jynx is incredibly vulnerable to Fire-types, but it’s still a great choice.
6
Tauros
Like Persian, Tauros is a great late-game attacker. With high Speed, high Attack, and a Normal Typing, it can deal with most Pokémon before they become a problem. Double Edge also has incredibly high attack power, and if it’s the final blow, Tauros doesn’t take the recoil damage it normally would.
Unlike Persian, Tauros doesn’t rely on Critical Hits. It’s all about raw power. However, that doesn’t mean it can’t make a critical hit. The chances are much lower, but if Tauros gets a Critical Hit, it’s guaranteed to be a one-hit KO for any Pokémon who isn’t Rock-type.
5
Zapdos
It was a given that a legendary Pokémon would end up on this list since the Legendary Birds are some of the strongest from the first generation. Zapdos is a powerhouse that sweeps an entire enemy lineup thanks to its good Speed and incredible Special stats.
Zapdos has the strongest Thunderbolt of all Rental Pokémon in the game, so you can end most fights in one or two hits. It also has Thunderwave, which will help you maintain the speed advantage by paralyzing your opponent. Zapdos would be perfect if it had Fly instead of Sky Attack to help avoid the harder-hitting moves.
4
Aeordactyl
Speed matters in Pokémon battles since most fights will end in two or three turns anyway. Going first means being able to two-hit your opponent before they do the same to you. Aerodactyl is tied for the second-fastest Pokémon out of all Rental Pokémon, with the fastest being Electrode.
That means Aerodactyl is going against almost all others first, letting it finish fights before accumulating too much damage. If it had a Rock-type move instead of Hyper Beam, it would be able to deal with bad matchups more effectively, nevertheless, it gets the job done.
3
Exeggutor
Exeggutor is a surprise entry on this list. When you think of strong Pokémon, Exeggutor might not be the first to come to mind, but its usefulness shouldn’t be overlooked. While it may not be the fastest Pokémon, it sure is bulky. With decent Health and a good Defense, this Pokémon can weather through most attacks, letting it hit enemies with a Stun Spore.
Paralyzing enemies effectively halves their speed, letting slower Pokémon take priority. And if Exeggutor gets low, you can restore health with Mega Drain. It’s not a completely full proof strategy, but you can at least get an edge on your opponent.
2
Gengar
Gengar has been a fan favorite throughout Pokémon history, and for good reason. Gengar is one of the best Special beat sticks in the game with the second-highest Special stat of all Rental Pokémon. Its Speed is nothing to scoff at either, so you can be confident that you’ll be going first most of the time.
With a great mix of offense and utility in its move set, Gengar allows you to adapt to whichever situation arises. It’s also a great answer to late-game Normal-type finishers, like Persian and Tauros since their strongest moves can’t hit Gengar. Gengar only has trouble against Pokémon with stray Psychic-type moves that it can’t KO immediately.
1
Jolteon
At the top of the list is the classic Eeveelution Jolteon who can help you gain the advantage if you’re down. Like Aerodactyl, Jolteon is the second-fastest Rental Pokémon in Stadium, meaning it will be guaranteed you go first. Since it has a very good Special stat as well, you’ll be able to two-hit KO most Pokémon if you don’t immediately faint them.
The only real threats to Jolteon are Rock/Ground-types like the Geodude line and Onyx, but those Pokémon aren’t great in Stadium, meaning you’ll rarely fight them when going against other players. That means your Jolteon is free to dominate the mid-game, leaving you in a great position at the end of the fight.
