Polestar has announced that its latest electric car, simply called the 4, will be revealed at the Shanghai auto show on 18 April.
The car was teased today with an image showing a portion of the hood and headlight from above. Giving little away, the image also shows the Polestar badge but not much else.
Thankfully Polestar has given a few more details. The Swedish automaker and Volvo sibling – both are owned by Chinese car giant Geely – said how the Polestar 4 “has taken the SUV coupe and transformed it for the electric age.”
Polestar adds how the 4 “marries the aerodynamics of a coupe with the space of an SUV in a package enhanced by modern technology.” The company continues: “Design cues and sustainability enhancements initially showcased in Polestar’s concept cars will make their production debut in Polestar 4.”
This suggests the new car will include design details from Polestar’s small but perfectly-formed back catalog of concept cars, including the Precept and the O2, which is now known as the Tesla Roadster-rivalling Polestar 6, a two-seat electric convertible. Excitingly, Polestar also revealed today how the 4 will be its fastest production car to date.
This should mean a 0-60 mph time below the 4.5 seconds of the dual-motor version of the Polestar 2. It isn’t clear if Polestar also means the 4 will be quicker than the Polestar 1, a hybrid GT that was limited to a maximum production run of 1,500 examples and hits 60 mph in 4.1 seconds.
The Polestar 3 is expected to be priced in the US from around $60,000 to $80,000 and have a range of up to 372 miles. Power is expected to be in the region of 300 hp for a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive model and over 450 hp for a dual-motor variant.
Polestar chief executive Thomas Ingenlath says the 4 is not just a larger version of the 2. “Polestar 4 is not simply a modified version of our first SUV. Instead, we reconsidered the entire design to create a new breed of SUV coupe.”
The company has previously said how the Polestar 4 will be larger than the 2 but smaller than the Polestar 3, a full-size SUV due out in 2024. These are expected to be followed by a coupe called the Polestar 5 and the aforementioned Polestar 6 two-seat convertible.
