Police standoff near BART Coliseum station after suspect rams police car

The Oakland Coliseum BART station was closed for about two hours on Sunday after a standoff that lasted several hours between police and a suspect barricaded in a car outside the station, San Leandro Police officials said.

The San Leandro Police Department says the incident began when the suspect involved in the standoff committed an armed robbery at a business in the 1000 block of MacArthur Boulevard in San Leandro around 11:30 a.m. The suspect left the scene in a silver Hyundai, which San Leandro police tracked down around 2 p.m. When police tried to apprehend the suspect while still in San Leandro, the suspect rammed one of the officer’s vehicles to escape.

The San Leandro police pursued the vehicle north to Oakland. After the suspect’s vehicle was disabled, they barricaded themselves alone inside the Hyundai.

Police spent hours trying to negotiate with the suspect, to no avail. Then around 7 p.m., the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office deployed K-9 units. The suspect sustained injuries and was taken into custody. They were taken by ambulance to receive medical attention.

BART trains began stopping again at the Oakland Coliseum station after being closed for about two hours.
