POLL: Are you concerned about driving licence renewals going online only?

Elderly motorists could be forced to renew their driving licence and pay for their vehicle tax online.

Some 11,500 Post Office branches across the country offer DVLA services but from June 30 the contract between the central Post Office company and the DVLA will expire.

There are said to be last-ditch talks to agree to extend over-the-counter services until March 2024 after negotiations stalled, The Times reported.

Thousands could be affected if talks between the two fail, with in-person help at risk of being withdrawn.

A DVLA spokesperson said: “The Post Office currently provides a limited range of DVLA services and talks over a contract extension are ongoing. We want our customers to be able to access our services as quickly and as easily as possible, and the role of front-office counter services will form part of those considerations.”

Liberal Democrat MP Alistair Carmichael has called for a deal claiming: “They are behaving as if they are in some hardball negotiation between Gordon Gekko and the Wolf of Wall Street.”

Six million DVLA transactions are completed annually in post offices, with many elderly drivers dependent upon the service to renew their licence every three year

Director of Diver Voices, a senior campaign group, Dennis Reed said: “The Government is going hell for leather of digitalisation of every service. It’s extremely worrying for older people, who feel increasingly isolated and divorced from modern society.”
