POLL: Should the UK follow France and ban short-haul domestic flights?

0

France has introduced a ban on domestic short-haul flights where alternative train routes exist to cut carbon emissions and make transport greener.

Emmanuel Macron’s Government brought in the ban on May 23, two years after the law was passed.

Resistance from airlines has meant that the alternative journey time by rail has been reduced from four hours to two and a half.

Holidaymakers and residents will no longer be able to fly between some cities including Paris, Nantes, Lyon and Bordeaux. Connecting flights are unaffected by the new law.

Speaking about the policy, Transport Minister Clément Beaune said France could no longer tolerate the super-rich using private planes while the public is dealing with an energy crisis and climate change.

French consumer group UFC-Que Choisir argued that the four-hour limit should have been retained so more routes could be blocked.

They said: “On average, the plane emits 77 times more CO2 per passenger than the train on these routes, even though the train is cheaper and the time lost is limited to 40 minutes.”

In contrast, the UK halved domestic air duty from April 1, with Ryanair claiming that it will help sell more budget domestic flights.

The UK domestic aviation industry was responsible for emitting 2.7 megatonnes of CO2 and CO2 equivalents in 2019 and some 62 percent of these emissions were from domestic flights between cities linked by rail.
