A low-mile 2005 Porsche Carrera GT supercar has recently taken the title of the most expensive car sold on popular online auction site Bring a Trailer (BaT), with the winning bid eclipsing US$1.9 million.

To be more specific, the Porsche – in a pretty basic Guards-red-with-black-interior, but showing only 1,255 km (780 miles) on the odometer – hammered at US$1,902,000 (roughly CDN$2.412 million).

When new, the Carrera GT wore an MSRP of about US$450,000, and classic-car insurer Hagerty suggests best-in-the-world examples with no wear are typically valued at about US$1.5 million today .

While the Carrera GT is an extremely impressive supercar boasting a 605-hp 5.7-liter V10 and a cadre of motorsports-derived tech, the only thing that really sets this car apart from the other 600 or so built is its immaculate condition, which can be chalked up to its having seen very little asphalt under its tires.

(Okay, and we called it “basic,” but only 40 came in Guards Red, a throwback colour worn by Porsches since the ’60s, so that may have helped, too.)

The car came with its original paperwork and accessories, including a set of fitted luggage; and saw 35 bids (and probably the most comments on a BaT auction) before it was secured by its new owner January 5, 2022.

The prior record-holder was a 1935 Duesenberg convertible that in June 2021 sold on BaT for US$1.34 million.
