If you’ve been looking for a way to update the vibe in your 997 Porsche 911, we’ve got good news for you. Porsche released a new infotainment system designed to plug into early-2000s Porsches and provide access to the latest tech without muddying up the dash.

The Porsche Classic Communication Management Plus (PCCM Plus) replaces the vehicles’ second-generation Porsche Communication Management (PCM) in 2 DIN format and allows users to mirror their smartphones on to a seven-inch touchscreen, using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for calls and navigation, or to connect via USB or Bluetooth to other storage devices to playback media. The unit can also act as a trip computer and, depending on the vehicle and spec, can offer settings for things like climate control, locks, and lights.

Compatible vehicles with the PCCM Plus’ include the sixth-gen 911 997 from 2005 to 2008, the Boxster and Cayman generation 987 from 2005 to 2008, and the first-gen Cayenne from 2003 to 2008. Units are specifically designed to fit seamlessly within each model.

Porsche has been offering infotainment options for retrofitters for some time now — you can check out the full lineup of them here — but this new PCCM Plus marks the first time the brand is loading units with region-specific content, which in Canada and the U.S. essentially means having the option to access SiriusXM satellite radio.

Today’s infotainment systems such as BMW’s iDrive are designed to be cutting-edge, but are so inbuilt that if and when they inevitably become obsolete, the only option to update a vehicle’s system will be with this sort of manufacturer-approved kit.

As with most jobs done on classic Porsches, the brand would prefer the work be done at an official Porsche centre or by an approved third-party installer. Pricing in the U.S. starts at US$1,475.99. We’ve reached out to Porsche Canada for details on Canadian pricing and will update this story when we learn more.
