Portland vs. BYU prediction and odds for West Coast Conference second round

0

The No. 8 seed in the WCC tournament, Portland Pilots rolled past San Diego, 92-74, in round one of the tournament yesterday, so they’re back in action against the No. 5 seed, BYU Cougars tonight.

BYU earned a bye in the tournament with a 7-9 conference record. The Cougars finished the regular season, 17-14 overall with a 71-58 win over Portland back on Dec. 31.

Portland is coming into this matchup with some momentum, but BYU has the rest advantage. The Cougars are favorites in this one.

Portland vs. BYU prediction and pick

When you get into tournament play, you need your best players to really show up and Portland’s did in round one.

The Pilots’ leading scorers, Moses Wood and Tyler Robertson had 19 and 23 respectively. However, I am worried about how they’ll hold up in a back-to-back because they didn’t get a lot of minutes out of their bench, especially in the backcourt.

Their three starting guards, Mike Meadows, Juan Sebastian Gorosito, and Robertson combined for 107 minutes.

Portland will have some tired legs which will likely hurt its 3-point shooting, which is a crucial part of its game. The Pilots shoot 37.1% from 3 which is 45th in the country and score 77.5 points a game because of it.

If they can’t shoot, then they won’t be able to hang around at all, because they’ll put up no resistance to BYU on the other end.

The Pilots are 353rd in opponent points per game, 78.6, and allow their opponents to shoot 38.4% from behind the arc. BYU is also sixth in defensive rebounding percentage in the country, 79.5% against a guard-heavy team like Portland, so the Pilots won’t get extra possessions that they’ll need to keep pace.
