Graham Potter on Everton win

Graham Potter admits he will never be a “sexy manager” after Paul Merson claimed Manchester United wouldn’t have the courage to appoint him.

The Brighton boss has excelled on the south coast since taking charge back in 2019.

Prior to that he enjoyed success in Sweden with his managerial profile firmly on the rise.

Potter is maximising his resources with the Seagulls and is being linked with top jobs elsewhere in the Premier League.

Tottenham were touted as a possible destination in the past but the Brighton boss concedes his name and his outlook doesn’t lend itself to certain opportunities.

“It is hard to be a sexy name when you are called Potter, especially if your first name is Graham. Then it becomes even more difficult to be sexy,” he said.

“Add into that a long face and a ginger beard and all the rest of it and I just have to stick to being a football coach and work with the players.”

Nevertheless his efforts will have attracted admiring glances around the Premier League.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola referred to Potter as the best English coach last season and just a few miles away at Old Trafford they will soon have a vacancy in the dugout.

Ralf Rangnick is set to help name his successor in the summer with Mauricio Pochettino among the favourites.

Merson though believes Potter would be an ideal appointment for United but is adamant they wouldn’t take the gamble.

He told Sky Sports : “If I was Man United, I’d be monitoring him. I’d think, ‘why not go for him?'”

But he then countered that with: “They won’t (appoint Potter(, they won’t because he’s not a (big( name. Simple as that.

“Then the Man United fans will go, ‘what are we getting someone from Brighton for?’ You know, and that’s how it works.”

Potter has attempted to shut down rumours of a move away from the Amex with his team sat in the top half.

He has cited the support and backing from those in key positions as crucial in his and the club’s rise.

“I am ambitious. I want to succeed. But I am no magician. I need help,” claimed Potter.

“To be successful as a coach, you need good people around you – staff, board, CEO, the strategy of the club, the structures around it, the players. I have got senior players here who are so helpful and supportive.

“We have a fantastic chairman who provides the clarity, vision and support for us all and allows us to get on with our work.

“Everything around the club gives you a chance as a coach.”
