The country’s favourite classic dish has just been revealed in time for Canada Day — and it shouldn’t be too surprising if you believe the stereotypes.

The culinary experts at Chefs Plate analyzed the average monthly Google searches of the nation’s favourite classics and found that fries topped with hot gravy and melted cheese curds reign supreme in Canada.

That’s right, poutine lovers, the quintessential Canadian dish and true comfort food was far and away the top choice with an average monthly search volume of 90,500.
Tied for second place — with 18,100 searches — were two very different dishes: bannock and Nanaimo bars.
Bannock — a type of bread which is fried or baked — originated in Scotland but was eventually adopted by the Indigenous Peoples of Canada, particularly the Metis of western Canada.
Meanwhile, named after the B.C. city, Nanaimo bars are a layered dessert made with a crumb base, custard-flavoured butter icing, and a chocolate topping.

Beaver tails had 12,100 searches and butter tarts averaged 9,900 searches to come in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Tourtiere, peameal bacon, split pea soup, Dutchies, lobster rolls, a Montreal smoked meat sandwich, Saskatoon berry pie, maple syrup pancakes and grilled oysters rounded out the list.
“Whether you’re firing up the grill for a Canada Day barbecue, heading to the park for a picnic or gathering your loved ones for a dinner party, these signature Canadian dishes will take centre stage, paying homage to the flavours that define the nation,” a spokesperson from Chefs Plate said.
