A powerful 5.7 earthquake has hit an Indonesian island.
The island of Seram has been hit by a powerful 5.7 magnitude earthquake. The island is the largest in the Moluccas region of central Indonesia. The earthquake hit on Thursday, November 4.
The authorities so far have reported no damage. They have also not declared a tsunami warning. This will be to the relief of many locals.
The earthquake hit 65.9 kilometres northeast of the town of Amahai. Almost 40,000 people live in the town. The quake was recorded by the US Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS monitors seismic activity across the globe.
According to the USGS, the epicentre of the quake hit at a depth of only 10 kilometres below the north of the island.
Indonesia has a shocking 7,000 earthquakes recorded each year. Luckily though most of them are of moderate size. Indonesia is on the Pacific Ring of Fire. This means the area is at high risk of volcanic activity and earthquakes.
