Premier League and EFL fixtures postponed this weekend and more could follow

A major rise in COVID-19 cases is wreaking havoc with the Premier League schedule.

The top-flight has been forced to postpone six fixtures this weekend, after three midweek matches were called off while a host of games in the EFL are also off.

Clubs up and down the country are starting to report more and more positive tests and in some cases that is starting to impact the amount of players available to take to the field on a matchday.

Tottenham’s trip to face Leicester on Thursday was called off, meaning that Spurs’ last three fixtures have all been postponed as a result of Covid.

The King Power cancellation came after Manchester United’s trip to Brentford on Tuesday evening was also postponed for similar concerns.

And Watford’s trip to Burnley was also called off with less than three hours’ notice due to an outbreak at Vicarage Road.

Now, six more fixtures, initially scheduled for this weekend, have been postponed.

Man United vs Brighton, Southampton vs Brentford, Watford vs Crystal Palace, West Ham vs Norwich and Everton vs Leicester are all off, it was confirmed on Thursday.

And Aston Villa vs Burnley was postponed just two hours before it was scheduled to take place on Saturday.

Arsenal are also starting to feel the bite of rising COVID cases

The Premier League are hoping that all remaining fixtures can still be played but that will depend on the moving picture as cases continue to rise across the 20 top flight clubs.

A statement read: “While recognising a number of clubs are experiencing Covid-19 outbreaks, it is the league’s intention to continue its current fixture schedule where safely possible. The health and wellbeing of all concerned remains our priority.”

The Championship, League One and League Two have all been impacted as well with 19 games across the EFL off as it stands.
