Benjani
Benjani had a different type of story to previous one-season wonders, and failed to find the back of the net for Portsmouth under Harry Redknapp in his first 14 appearances. He became a cult hero at Fratton Park however as the fans admired his work rate, though he soon found himself among the goals.
The Zimbabwean scored 12 times in 23 appearances during the 2007/08 season, before sealing a January move to Manchester City. He scored just four league goals in two seasons in Manchester, however, and fans will have wished that Redknapp had not pushed the striker to leave Portsmouth.
The deal nearly fell apart as Benjani missed his flight to Manchester after falling asleep at the airport according to Pompey chief Peter Storrie: “In his own inevitable, wonderful way – and we all love Benji so much – he falls asleep at the airport and misses two planes,” Storrie said in The Times. “You couldn’t write the script. The next plane at 7 o’clock got cancelled and the 8.30 was delayed. It just made the whole situation a fiasco.”
Benjani denied that he fell asleep at the airport, and Manchester City got the deal over the line, though they may have wished that he enjoyed his nap even longer as the Portsmouth icon failed to recapture his sparkling form from 2007.
