The two biggest flops of the Premier League season have been outed by Express Sport readers, who also lavished Erling Haaland in praise after his record-breaking debut campaign at Manchester City. The Norwegian striker played a significant role in helping Pep Guardiola’s side to wrap up their third successive English title ahead of Arsenal, who fought exceptionally hard but ended up falling just short in their efforts to claim the end-of-season honours.
Haaland was voted as the Premier League’s signing of the season in our latest football poll, with an overwhelming 72 per cent of respondents naming the 22-year-old as the brightest star in the division over the course of the campaign. He managed to smash Alan Shearer’s long-standing record for the most goals by one player by finding the net on 36 occasions, which accounted for over 38 per cent of City’s total number.
The towering Norway international was also named the Premier League’s best young player with a 62 per cent share of the vote, seeing him beat the likes of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, while he also edged out Marcus Rashford and Casemiro in the voting for the overall player of the season.
It remains to be seen whether Haaland will be able to repeat his prolific form when the new Premier League campaign gets underway in August, with former Liverpool ace Jamie Carragher having already tipped the City forward to emerge as the division’s greatest ever player before he eventually leaves the Etihad Stadium.

“Haaland just looks amazing,” said Carragher on Sky Sports shortly after the player’s move to City last summer. “We know we’ve got a great player in the league, but I think we’ve got something really special that when he’s finished his time at Manchester City or the Premier League, we’ll be talking about him alongside Thierry Henry. This lad could end up being the best player we see in the Premier League.”
Express Sport readers were also asked to choose their biggest flops of the season, with Tottenham forward Richarlison coming out on top after receiving a 27 per cent share of the vote. The Brazilian forward only managed to score a single Premier League goal for the north Londoners, who he joined from Everton last summer on a long-term contract in a deal worth around £60million.
Chelsea new boy Mykahylo Mudryk came home in second place after being chosen by 24 per cent of voters, while 18 per cent named Raheem Sterling as the biggest disappointment of the season after failing to set the world alight at Stamford Bridge following his move from City almost a year ago.
Frank Lampard, meanwhile, was named as the biggest managerial flop of the campaign following his disastrous interim spell at Chelsea after replacing Graham Potter in the Blues dugout. The former England midfielder also struggled to impress while in charge of Everton during the first half of the season, after which he was sacked at the end of January to be replaced by Sean Dyche.
