​P​reserved in pixels​: ​traditional Malaysian shops and eateries – in pictures

Malaysian artist Shin Oh uses volumetric pixels, or voxels – essentially pixels in 3D – to recreate traditional shops for the digital age. In her Tiny Voxel Shops and Hawker Stall series, she painstakingly builds bakeries, hair salons, coffee shops, chicken rice stalls and more. The aim is to preserve these small businesses, many of which are being demolished to make way for urban redevelopment. “Before I started the project, I talked to my mother about the shops we used to visit. It was really heartwarming to talk about the good old times,” she says. “It’s a project that will spark a feeling of nostalgia and bring back memories for Malaysians, but also people who have come across these old shops while travelling in Asia.”
