FC Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez has been backed by the club’s president Joan Laporta, who confirmed that signings will be made in the January transfer market.
Barca are currently dealing with a fresh crisis following the 3-3 draw to Inter Milan in the Champions League that practically sealed their second consecutive failure to advance out of the group stage.
For the first time in his tenure, rumors have started to spread of discontent with Xavi’s work. On Friday, however, Laporta backed the legendary midfielder in an interview with Barca TV.
“There is total confidence in Xavi,” Laporta confirmed. “He is a great coach and he will surely go on and give us great success in the future.
“He knows the club perfectly, he knows how we play and he is ideal for Barca. He has our support and he knows it, and it’s important that he knows there is this trust so that things go well”, Laporta added.
As for Xavi’s mood, Laporta explained how he saw his manager “sad” and “hurt like all Culers” after the Inter stalemate.
“But Xavi has a quality and that is that in any complicated situation he always knows how to see the positives. I like that and I know he will move forward with the team because they are doing a great job.
“We were all excited about this [edition of the] Champions League, but there are other competitions like the La Liga that we can win,” Laporta pointed out.
After spending around €150mn ($146mn) in the summer due to the activation of various ‘economic levers’, Laporta revealed that Barca are also planning to get their checkbook out in January when the transfer window opens for a month.
“We are working with the coach, the technical secretariat, and the director of football for this winter market,” Laporta said.
“We have been analyzing things for some time and the team will be improved if we have the chance to do so.”
“We are in a sporting project [that is] under construction [and] is settling down over time, but everything can be improved. Now a market window is coming and we are clear that we can improve the team.
“The project must always have the chance to improve and that’s what we should do,” Laporta further clarified.
