Blusher feels a bit left behind against sheeny highlighters and skin-warming bronzers, but it just so happens to be a major beauty trend for winter 2021. Don’t just take our word for it; pro makeup artists have long used blusher to make faces look more energised and awake, however, for the rest of us, we’ve spotted blush-tinted cheeks reigning supreme on the catwalk, red carpet and the ‘gram lately.
Whether it be a subtle hint of pink, a bold flash of rouge, a natural, dewy tint, a swipe of berry or a cheek-sculpting neutral, the right blusher for your skin tone (and preference) can instantly lift your complexion and make all the difference. Now that we’re getting into the colder months, we’ve been loving the tonal berry shades swept across lips and cheeks.
Then there’s the fact that our blushers are one of the hardest working multi-taskers in our makeup bag. Depending on the formula you choose, you can work that one shade across lips, cheeks and eye lids. It makes it a convertible and practical colour option, especially if you go for a cream formula, which can be patted in with fingers. Makeup artist, Ash Kholm, created the pretty look below by blending the Nudestix Nudies All Over Face Blush Colour in Cherie across both lips and cheeks for a more cohesive look.
As for application, a pop of colour to the apples of cheeks is classic for a reason, but don’t let that stop you from experimenting. Recent blusher application techniques have shown just how dramatically a sweep of blush can change your face shape, depending on the area you apply it to – from “full apple” to “lifted” and “sunkissed”. Or take your cue from Rihanna who is a master at draping her blusher (sweeping here blusher from her temple down onto her cheekbones in a “C” shape to frame her features).
So, how do you find the perfect formula for you? It’s a good idea to match the texture to your skin type. If you’ve got oily skin you might find a matte powder works better. If you’re dry, opt for a gel or cream.
As for finding the right colour, rose and peach hues tend to suit lighter skin tones and deep plums and bright tangerines beautifully complement darker skin tones. Or, if you like to stick to the bronzed look, don’t fret – an apricot coloured blush will only amp up warm tones. Here, we’ve tried and tested a range of blushers to suit all kinds of skin types and tones.
