Projected college basketball rankings after Virginia, Arizona and Miami upset, Texas falls to Baylor

Taking a look at the projected Top 25 college basketball rankings after Arizona and Miami were upset on buzzer-beaters and Texas fell to Baylor.

Who needs the field of 68 — or even for the calendar to turn — to start getting the March Madness vibes in college basketball? Certainly, a number of Top 15 in the college basketball rankings are wishing that wasn’t the case, but Saturday was as chaotic as any day in the NCAA Tournament with some of the top teams in the country.

Previously No. 7 ranked Arizona and No. 13 Miami both had some tough breaks on Saturday as they went down to unranked in-state rivals in the final moments.

For the Wildcats, they were up 88-86 when Arizona State’s Desmond Cambridge put up a prayer from beyond halfcourt as the clock wound down. By some sort of miracle, though, it found the bottom of the net to deliver the final blow in an upset.

It was a similar fate for the Hurricanes against a lackluster Florida State team. Miami went up with a made Jordan Miller 3-pointer with just under five seconds left on the clock. That’s when Matthew Cleveland got the rock in the final moments and put up a contested 3-pointer of his own that found nylon as time expired to pull off the shocking upset.

If that weren’t enough, Baylor controlled their home Big 12 matchup against Texas in a big-time showdown with the Bears coming up with the 81-72. And the woes for the Virginia Cavaliers continued as their early-week loss at Boston College was compounded with a loss in Chapel Hill to North Carolina on Saturday.

Needless to say, it’s not March Madness yet, but there’s plenty of chaos in the college basketball rankings now.

Baylor’s loss earlier in the week will keep them from staying in the Top 10 overall but they help their case to say close with the win over Texas. Meanwhile, Miami stays in the same spot ultimately after being projected to move up thanks to the losses by teams ahead of them in the rankings. Virginia tumbles eight spots, though and could fall farther if the voters are left wholly unimpressed.

Beyond this, we also have teams falling out of the Top 25 with Creighton losing twice this week, TCU, Texas A&M and Iowa State also falling out of the rankings. And with that combined with a recent hot streak, welcome back to the college basketball rankings, Kentucky!
