Prue Leith sniffs Coronation quiche at lunch with Prince Edward

There was believed to have been a momentarily tense atmosphere at the royal banquet as onlookers awaited Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith’s seal of approval.

However, they needn’t have worried, as the BBC star declared the special recipe, which had come direct from the Buckingham Palace kitchen, was a hit.

Prue commented at the bash, which aimed to bring faith leaders together through the joy of food, that the egg, spinach, tarragon and broad bean quiche was “really good”.

“There was no soggy bottom, the custard was not overcooked and dry, and the balance of tarragon was perfect,” she praised.

The Bake Off star added: “Even cold, if the ingredients are right and the pastry is nice and buttery, it will taste great.”

As palace staff gathered together with numerous faith leaders, all of whom tucked in, she mused: “[Food is] the glue that sticks families together.

“It is how you make friends, and it’s the thing that allows you to talk to each other.”

Warming to her subject, she continued: “If you remember what happened at the Queen’s Jubilee, people really were out in the streets and there were tables full of every kind of national dish you could think of. That’s what Britain’s supposed to be about.”

That atmosphere is expected to be replicated for the King’s Coronation, when various groups will host street parties in honour of Charles III.

The Big Lunch is subsequently due to take place on May 7, and, although it’s thought that Prince Harry won’t be present for that part of the festivities, various other royals are planning to make an appearance.
