The French sensation signed a new deal with the Ligue 1 giants last summer, making a last minute U-turn having seemingly been set to join Real Madrid.
That contract expires in the summer of 2024 with the option to extend by a further 12 months, an clause the player has the final say over. PSG are eager for the forward to pen fresh terms.
But Mbappe has now put Europe’s elite on red alert having informed PSG in a letter to the club he will not be activating the clause to extend his deal until 2025.
The move, as reported by L’Equipe, has infuriated PSG. If that extension is not triggered, Mbappe will be free hold talks and agree a pre-contract deal with a club outside of France from January next year and leave on a free transfer in the summer of 2024.
PSG will not allow the World Cup winner to walk away for nothing and if they are unable to convince him to extend his current deal, they will look to cash in on him this summer.
Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester United have all been monitoring Mbappe’s situation at Parc de Princes.
While enjoying another prolific season with 41 goals in 43 appearances for PSG this season, Mbappe’s long-term future at the club has come into doubt on more than one occasion this term.
In October, the 24-year-old was forced to deny reports he had asked to leave the club.
Widespread reports in France and Spain claimed he was pushing to leave the French capital with Real Madrid or Liverpool his preferred destinations.
The source of his frustrations was claimed to be a number of broken promises from the club’s hierarchy, including those over new signings in the summer window and his own role in the team.
Mbappe would later insist he was ‘very happy’ at the club.
