Carrillo thinks the Internet’s original favorite, Nudestix’s Nudies Matte Blush & Bronze in Moodie Blu, works best for people with medium and deeper skin tones who are looking “for a bolder cream [blush] option.” When it comes to applying bolder colors, he always likes to use a big fluffy brush such as his go-to, Chanel Powder Brush 106, “to start off light,” as he puts it. “I start with a larger fluffy brush that has a bit of a point to it because it’s not as dense and deposits color softly and more airbrushed than a dense, smaller brush,” Carrillo explains.
Figueroa says Fenty Beauty’s Cheeks Out Freestyle Blush in Drama Cla$$ would also work well on medium skin tones, specifically on those with yellow undertones. “It is fun and vibrant but because this is a cream formula, [you should] start off light and build more intensely,” she says. Using her fingertips, she likes to put this blush on the high points of her cheekbones “to give the face a beautiful lift.”
While Carrillo finds that Nudestix’s blush is also suitable for deeper skin tones, Figueroa is partial to Danessa Myricks’s Vision Flush Blush in Grape. “This berry-purple blush is incredible on a deeper complexion,” she explains. “It has a beautiful pigment that is buildable and can be used on the eyes, lips, and cheeks for a monochromatic feel.” She recommends dabbing the blush onto the skin with its provided wand applicator, then “pressing on the cheeks using your fingertips.”
If you’d rather find some purple blush on your own, Carrillo and Figueroa advise looking for the hue of purple that is suitable for your skin tone. For example, they recommend those with fair skin to choose a blush with a “pale” or “lavender” finish, while Figueroa says medium skin tones should aim for “pure purple” colors. According to Carrillo, deep skin tones should reach for purple blushes that have a “more mauve or plum” pigment.
There’s no chance that the hype surrounding purple blush will fade away anytime soon, so if you want to try it for yourself, run — don’t walk — to get your hands on some before it’s all gone.
