If you’re hosting a barbecue for the Fremantle Dockers elimination final this weekend, there are a few essentials you may want to pick up — starting with some special snags.
Dockers-themed sausages will be available at renowned butcher Scarfo’s Meating Place for a limited time on the weekend of the elimination final on Friday and Saturday, September 2 and 3.
The popular purple snags have made a comeback from 2013 when WA had purple fever ahead of the Dockers’ first Grand Final clash against Hawthorn.
The game, kicking off at Optus Stadium at 6.10 pm, is already a sell-out as the Dockers prepare to embark on their first finals campaign since 2015 in front of a record home crowd against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday.
Tony Scarfo said the snags, which are Scarfo’s low-fat BBQ beef sausages dipped in natural food colouring, were a crowd favourite last time so he had to bring them back.
“Nine years ago, we literally sold 1.3 tonnes of sausages on the Grand Final weekend, and 600kg of that were the purple variety,” he told PerthNow.
“A lot of Dockers fans were grabbing them to stir up their Eagles mates and create a bit of banter, and it worked, and it definitely put me on the map.
“They’ll be in the cabinet Friday and Saturday — it’s all just a bit of fun.”
Scarfo, who’s a big Freo fan himself, said he often had the chance to say hello to some of the retired Freo favourites who popped in now and again to get their meat fix.
“We know them. They all shop here — McManus, Sandilands, Cook!” he said, adding that he wished the side luck for their weekend challenge.

SWEET TREATS
Those after a sweet treat to offer guests can make an order for Fremantle Dockers-themed cupcakes at DNK Cupcakes in the Freo Markets.
“We will have purple themed and Fremantle Docker topper cupcakes,” Ruchi Saxena said, which will be available for sale at the stall at the markets and to order.
“The cupcakes are usually popular and get sold out quite fast.”
LET THE FINALS BE-GIN!
When it comes to celebrations or perhaps … fans drowning their sorrows, Australian Distilling Co has just what you need, well, if you fancy a gin, that is.
The distillery has just launched a new Fremantle-themed gin.
“While the new gin wasn’t specifically made in support of the Dockers – the purple branding (with an anchor), gift box and logo are certainly a nod to the force that is our Freo Dockers,” a company spokeswoman said.
“Fremantle was identified as an important city within the state with plenty of character and a rich history which worked well with ADCo’s ethos.”
When it comes to taste, the master distiller struck the perfect balance between the strong flavours of menthol, black pepper, and peppermint gum to transform the classic dry gin into a lively but smooth drinking experience.
BEER
If gin ain’t your thing, and you prefer a beer, you’ll be happy to know the Dockers have partnered with WA-founded brewery Pirate Life to unveil a limited edition Wharfie Draught on the eve of Fremantle’s return to the finals.
Far from a clumsy crossover though, the Pirate Life and Dockers connection runs deep within the club: Nat Fyfe was an early investor, thanks to his friendship with high school chum Jack Cameron.
Packaged in a resplendent purple can, the draught can be purchased via the Pirate Life website, Liquor Barons, and select liquor stores, while it will also be up for grabs during Fremantle’s Elimination Final clash with the Western Bulldogs.
Meanwhile, a little closer to Fremantle, Myaree’s Otherside Brewing Co. have released Purple Rain, a 4.5 per cent pastry sour which gets its purple hue from “lashings of mulberry, blueberry and butterfly pea flower”.
Vanilla is also used to create a fruity sour with a hint of tea, according to tasting notes.
While Otherside’s beer is an unofficial release, the brewery says Purple Rain is “inspired by, and in support of, a local football team that remains anonymous”.
WINE
So there’s nothing to ‘wine’ about… we also have the perfect drop for wine drinkers.
Purple Reign, the world’s first purple wine, created with grapes from the Margaret River and Great Southern wine regions in WA, is a great fit for a Freo final BBQ. Plus, it’s meant to be better for you, according to the creator.
“Masstengo [the creator of Purple Reign] is a disrupter in the wine industry, pushing the limits and traditions of winemaking with the aim of removing synthetic additives such as sulphites, which can cause harm and exacerbate health issues such as asthma and replacing them with safe and beneficial alternatives derived from botanicals,” Tim Macnamara, the founder of WA start-up Masstengo, explained.
SNACKS
When it comes to snacks, you may want to include the new purple sweet potato sea salt Pringles or Old El Paso blue tortilla chips with guacamole.
